Watch the Horizon Line

Photo Tips

Here’s an easy, but important tip: Keep the horizon line level. That’s sometimes not that easy, especially when you are photographing from a bouncing boat, as I was when I took this picture in Antarctica.

If the horizon line is askew, you can straighten it in Photoshop using the Measure tool.

The placement of the horizon line in a photograph is also important. I find that if the sky is boring and the foreground is interesting, I’ll compose the picture with the horizon line near the top of the frame. If the foreground is boring but the rest of the scene is interesting, I’ll compose the picture with the horizon line near the bottom of the frame.
