Drobo has just announced today that they are releasing two new Drobo storage units, the Drobo S with an eSata interface and faster Firewire 800 performance and a 5 drive capacity and the DroboElite an 8bay unit with dual iSCSI interfaces.

We are fans of Drobo around here, but have been sorely dissapointed in the past with the performance of the Drobo unit even over FireWire 800, so we can’t recommend it for live usage. We basically use ours for online storage on the network.

We were also excited to see Drobo releasing a Customer Loyalty Program, however it seems to offer just a paltry $50 discount on upgrading from a FW800 Drobo to the new Drobo S.

We would love to upgrade, but our previous experience with the Drobo performance over FW800 makes us skeptical on the new Drobo S.
