Randy Jay Braun
Magistrate of Making Pictures
Randy Jay Braun brings his retail art gallery experience to the DPE blog. For twenty years, he has profitably created, packaged, and sold his own photography as art. Randy currently owns Hawai’i’s oldest-running fine-art photography gallery, established in 1989, featuring his own images, as well as the artwork of other photographers.
Traditionally trained as a Registered Biological Photographer, and skilled darkroom technician, Randy got his start in L.A. as a staff medical photographer, specializing in heart surgery documentation. He moved out of the medical world and successfully pursued his dream to become a fine-art photographer living and working in paradise.
Randy says, “I am a professional camera-artist. I create images and I sell them. If people don’t buy my art, then I don’t eat; so my work has to connect with the customers. Being a fine-art photographer is the greatest job on Earth. I highly recommend it!”

As I view everything around me, I always think of how to encapsulate a piece of that world in the frame. My goal is to share a piece of our reality in a way that perhaps the viewer had not considered. Or to share a piece of our reality in a way that the viewer had never slowed down enough to admire. I find beauty both in nature and in the human-made world around us. And I am consistently surprised at how little of that beauty is ever noticed or appreciated.
I started taking photographs for myself. I would spend an hour, an afternoon, a day or longer exploring an area or subject and be fascinated at what my camera saw. As I spent more time behind the lens, I began to have a deeper understanding between my vision and the nature of the world around me and of the interactions of light, shadow and color. This study is an ongoing one which I will never finish but hope to constantly advance.
As time passed, I began to understand how I could use photography to bring the beauty I saw in the world to those who might appreciate it. The joy of sharing this, my simple vision, was a bit startling at first. Yet it was addicting. My hope is that after experiencing one of my images that the viewer will be inspired to stop and see their own reality in a new way.

King of Color Management
By now, photographers looking to dig into the nuances of digital imaging have probably heard of Eddie Tapp. The fact that he’s been an professional photographer of merit for many years is part of it, but that’s not all that drives the growing demand for his lectures and workshops.
As amazing as digital photography is proving to be, from the new professional-level cameras to the possibilities afforded by the RAW photo format, this new medium is still intimidating. Not all of professional photographers in the world have made the switch from film, and those ready to take that step want to learn from someone preferably one of their own who knows digital inside and out.
Eddie fits that bill. Not only is he a great photographer, he’s also a great teacher, inducted to the Photoshop Hall of Fame in 2006. “Eddie is one of those instructors who has a connection with students that just really sticks,” comments Scott Kelby, President of the National Association of Photoshop Professionals (NAPP). It takes a lot of patience and requires a better-than-usual understanding of how to shoot and process with digital equipment. From PPA he has received the National, Directors and Gerhard Bakker Awards. One of his highest honors in his career is being accepted as an Explorer of Light with Canon USA.
Eddie offers one- to five-day workshops, on-site staff training, one-on-one training, and an “ETime Remote” on-line training program (http://www.eddietapp.com), along with seminars in cities throughout the world and has a series of interactive educational DVDs produced by Software-Cinema.com along with Kelbytraining.com (online training). So, he recently embarked on a project that colleagues have urged him to do for a long time: writing how-to books.
Rather than create another 800-page doorstop that glosses over information in an effort to cover everything, Eddie is writing a series of books that allow readers to drill down into specific topics. Eddie Tapp on Digital Photography (from O’Reilly Media).
The first 2 books (“Photoshop Workflow Setups” “Practical Color Management” ) are already available, What do readers think of his approach? NAPP’s Scott Kelby sums it up well: “Eddie’s easy-going style and years of real-world experience make him one of the top trainers today.”
